Chateau Velké Březno

It was built in 1843-45 for the highest purgrave of the Bohemian Kingdom, Count Karel Chotek, in the style of late Austrian Empire. It was then rebuilt in the Romantic Neo-Renaissance style. Žofie Chotková, the granddaughter of the founder of the chateau, also stayed at the chateau. As the wife of the heir to the Habsburg throne, Franz Ferdinand d'Este, she was shot together with him in 1914 in the Sarajevo assassination that started the First World War. The castle is surrounded by a beautiful natural English park with many rare trees and shrubs. In Velké Březno you can also take an excursion to the famous Velké Březno Brewery.
